Professional Athlete Kurt Yaeger turns tragedy into triumph for disabled athletes and their families, while training for the ultimate motocross race, the 2010 X- Games.
Extreme Recovery will bring high energy sports action, touching stories of survival, wrapped in an overall message of triumph and the will of the human spirit.
Tragedy, Triumph, and a New Path.
Three and a half years ago Kurt Yaeger, a professional extreme sports athlete, was involved in a horrific motorcycle accident. Broken ribs, collapsed lung, broken vertebra, pelvis in half, bladder torn open, and left leg destroyed. After 29 corrective surgeries his body healed but the doctors could not save his left leg. His leg was amputated and Kurt’s professional sports career was over. Or so he thought...
Since his recovery, Kurt has been featured in several BMX magazines, and he’s given interviews for newspapers, magazines, ESPN and others. It’s an amazing story but Kurt shrugs it off as “normal.” He’s an extremely likable guy who tries to help where he can. He’s worked with the “Wounded Soldiers” organization helping war veterans recover. He’s involved with the National Veterans Association, volunteering his time for whatever they need. He visits people in the hospital who have become amputees, encouraging them in any way possible. He’s part owner of a start-up pedal company, Proton Locks, which created a magnetic pedal that makes it possible for amputees to ride bikes safely and effectively. However, Kurt still has a void in his heart for the sports world, which he thought he would never fill again. That is until his good friend and gold medal winning BMXer, Chad Kagy, mentioned that they have a Motocross race in the X-GAMES, (This is the Olympics for Alternative sports) where amputees race one another. Kurt’s interest and excitement was limitless. Kurt watched this year’s X-GAMES (July, 09), and was completely floored when he saw amputee Motocross racers compete for a gold medal. He thought over and over to himself “I can do that.” |
